There is so much different set ups and bursts you can do, so don’t let these examples limit your imagination.
Untamed is a bruiser-style build with great survivability, combined with a melee oneshot and good area pressure. Untamed excels in ranked games due to its versatility and flexibility as a profession.
An important note about Untamed: It’s is one of the two classes in the game that has an F6 and F7. Binding these to something that you can easily reach so you won’t have to skill-click in a fight.
Contrary to Longbow Untamed it utilizes hammer, sacrificing most of its ranged damage for more crowd control skills and AoE damage as well as barrier.
Build Fundamentals
Untamed is what ranger mains always wanted ranger to be. A class with the ability to control its pet. Untamed can control its pet to its fullest, by having the pet abilities as abilities you can cast, with your F1 to F4, F6 and F7. But because you have to cast all pet abilities manually, you can’t get accidentally carried by your pet, unless you know all the pet skills, what they do, how they function and when it is best to use them. Therefore do take time to read your pet abilities, as they make great additions to your kit.
Untamed can be played in many different ways, however most common, and most successful is roamer. Untamed is able to traverse the map really quickly, using skills like Unnatural Traversal and Swoop and can pick up kills, by quickly outnumbering the enemy. Where untamed falls of is in bigger teamfights against classes that apply like Necromancer or Tempest. By quickly going into a fight, you prevent yourself from getting weakness and you can quickly burst an enemy into oblivion.
Damage
Untamed has damage on nearly all its skills, as long as you use them correctly, and land it on your enemy. The hardest skills to manage are your pet skills, as the pet AI gets easily confused by terrain and movement. It helps to use skills like Venomous Outburst and Smoke Assault to make your pet teleport on top of your target and you can use pet melee skills right after. Since you don’t have much ranged damage, you should actively kite any ranged abilities and wait for an opportunity, or use Enveloping Haze and keep your pet near you to block any projectiles that would hit you. Then you can burst using Maul or Thump combined with Unnatural Traversal to quickly burst or knock down your enemy, and follow up with other damaging abilities.
Your Crowd Control skills are very important on untamed, as some skills such as Unleashed Wild Swing and Unleashed Savage Shock Wave do more damage to enemies that are affected by crowd control. Your crowd control skills include:
Nature's Binding always available as your utility. Keep in mind, this utility is very powerful in a burst as, if you land the initial hit, your enemy won’t be able to escape it for the whole duration of 4 seconds, even if they dodge. The only way to escape it is using stability, shadowstep or invulnerability. However, the initial hit can be dodged, blocked, made invulnerable and the cage will not appear.
Untamed has a lot of sustain, combined with a health pool of 27k HP, barrier, and a relatively strong heal skill. Your main stun break is Mutate Conditions which also cleanses all your conditions, and “mutates” them into . If you don’t have it available, you should be cautious in fights, and try to predict and prevent disables using your evades, like dodges, Swoop and Counterattack Kick, blocks like Counterattack and your elite skill, Forest's Fortification, which gives you stability and reduced damage.
Similarly, your heal skill, Perilous Gift stops you from taking all damage for its duration, but it doesn’t stop conditions from being applied and disables from working on you. Therefore you should try and use it when you predict your enemies are about to burst you with power damage. Your other sources of heal is life steal from Savage Slash and Relentless Whirl from Natural Fortitude and you also have barrier on your standard hammer attacks as well as all your utility skills from Nature's Shield. Not to mention that you get reduced incoming damage if your pet is unleashed from Vow of the Untamed and from Forest's Fortification, which also gives you , and .
