Vindicator’s Retribution variant is a highly mobile and durable skirmisher, more comparable to the old Renegade than conventional roamers like Willbender or Herald. Dropping some key offensives like Forerunner of Death or the Devastation traitline for more utility through Boons and sustain in form of Vassals of the Empire and the Retribution traitline , the build shifts Revenant’s identity from a pure roamer to a jack-of-all-traits.

Build Fundamentals

Especially noteworthy are the two main advantages of the Vindicator specialization, being the Greatsword – a more conservative alternative to the mostly offensive Sword / Sword set – and an improved dodge – consuming more Endurance for a longer dodge frame with powerful effects once the dodge ends. In case of this build, the dodge we take is Vassals of the Empire: In combination with the Retribution traitline, a single dodge offers a wide variety of both offensive and defensive Boons, as well as decent damage in a large AoE and Chilled, helping the build out grind it’s opponents in 1v1 scenarios.

Being a pure melee build, the Greatsword being our primary offensive weapon is supplemented by two offensive Legends – Legendary Assassin Stance and Legendary Alliance Stance.

Legendary Assassin Stance offers accessible [skill quickness] through Phase Traversal and Song of the Mists, as well as damage amplification through Impossible Odds – therefore, it’s the stance in which most offensive weaponskills like Mist Unleashed, Phantom's Onslaught and especially Eternity's Requiem will be used.

Similarly, Legendary Alliance Stance offers devastating hardhitters like Nomad's Advance and Spear of Archemorus. It also provides decent resustain via Selfless Spirit and Selfish Spirit, in addition to stability through Reaver's Rage to channel said heals without being interrupted. Therefore, Energy while in the Legendary Alliance Stance is usually best used on its skills, preserving Greatsword’s cooldowns for the next swap to Legendary Assassin Stance.

Mobility

Vindicator has excellent proactive mobility through permanent Swiftness via Rapid Flow as well as its many leaps, dashes and rolls like Phantom's Onslaught, Nomad's Advance, and backward rolls like Battle Dance and Riposting Shadows, allowing it to rotate even faster than most pure roamers do.  Additionally, Legendary Assassin Stance offers Phase Traversal, further increasing Vindicator’s chase potential and giving the important advantage of ignoring terrain by teleporting through it – as long as there’s a target available.

The most important mechanics to master Vindicators mobility therefore are the “About face”, turning your character in a 180° angle so defensive rolls like Battle Dance and Riposting Shadows become additional mobility, as well as the “Take target” keybind to utilize Phase Traversal to its full potential. Additionally, Weapon Swap the aftercast of Nomad's Advance to cancel the strike animation and slow is also a neat trick to become ever so slightly faster.

Sustain & Healing

While Vindicator’s resustain may seem mediocre for a skirmisher, its potential for damage mitigation is unmatched in this metagame. The prolonged dodge frame of Vassals of the Empire, Resolution and Protection after every dodge, enhanced endurance regeneration through Sigil of Energy, Song of Arboreum, Song of the Mists and Energy Meld, as well as its strong blocks and evades such as Imperial Guard, Warding Rift and Surge of the Mists leave the enemy very little room to actually hit the Vindicator for meaningful damage – as long as the Vindicator properly manages their defensive resources.

A major weakness of this build is the condition cleanse. After Tree Song got heavily nerfed in PvP, on weapon- / legendswap proccing effects like Sigil of Cleansing, Sigil of Escape and Cleansing Channel became significantly more important for managing condition pressure. Therefore, the Weapon Swap to Staff into Renewing Wave is the most important cleansing resource in condition matchups, especially relevant for timeframes in which you can’t access Tree Song immediately.
An especially pesky condition to keep in mind is Weakness – it not only prevents the Vindicator from doing relevant damage, but also deprives them of their most important resource, which is endurance.

Vindicator’s Devastation variant, while equally mobile to the Retribution variant, is much more of a conventional roamer and plays itself very similar to Power Herald. Since the build runs Forerunner of Death and the Devastation traitline, it lacks sufficient sustain to out grind longlasting 1v1s – and therefore either leaves them to outnumber the map elsewhere or kills the opponent with sheer damage before their superior resustain can take over.

In case of this build, the dodge we take is Forerunner of Death: A small AoE, doing enormous damage on impact and further amplifying followup damage by 15%.
Since we don’t run Vassals of the Empire, we pick up Brutality to make up for the missing Quickness duration and Assassin's Presence for additional damage amplification. However, Thrill of Combat for some additional resustain or Swift Termination for even more damage are also viable options.

Being a pure melee build, the Greatsword being our primary offensive weapon is supplemented by two offensive Legends – Legendary Assassin Stance and Legendary Alliance Stance.

Legendary Assassin Stance offers accessible Quickness through Phase Traversal and Song of the Mists, as well as damage amplification through Impossible Odds – therefore, it’s the stance in which most offensive weaponskills like Mist Unleashed, Phantom's Onslaught and especially Eternity's Requiem will be used. Additionally, Rapid Swipe in combination with Brutality, Impossible Odds and potentially Enchanted Daggers does surprising amounts of damage, being a strong tool to catch the opponent off-guard after having exhausted all of your Greatsword abilities.

Mobility

Vindicator has excellent proactive mobility through permanent Swiftness via Rapid Flow, as well as its many leaps, dashes and rolls like Phantom's Onslaught, Nomad's Advance, Battle Dance, Riposting Shadows, allowing it to rotate even faster than most pure roamers do.  Additionally, Legendary Assassin Stance offers Phase Traversal, further increasing Vindicator’s catchup potential and giving the important advantage of ignoring terrain by teleporting through it – as long as there’s a target available.

Given its role as a pure roamer, the build has decent resustain compared to its counterparts through Legendary Alliance Stance’s Selfless Spirit and Selfish Spirit not sharing a cooldown. The build’s damage mitigation is still decent, given its prolonged dodge frame, the enhanced endurance regeneration through Sigil of Energy, Song of Arboreum, Song of the Mists and Energy Meld, as well as its strong blocks and evades such as Imperial Guard, Warding Rift and Surge of the Mists. However, not running the Retribution traitline and the defensive boons provided by Vassals of the Empire renders the Devastation Vindicator much more vulnerable to enemy follow up right after the dodgeframe finishes. The two ways of counterplaying this window of vulnerability are either dodging onto the enemy, forcing them to dodge or take massive damage, or immediately using a defensive skill like Imperial Guard, Warding Rift, Surge of the Mists, Riposting Shadows, Battle Dance or Reaver's Rage right after the dodge.

Another major weakness of this build is the condition cleanse. After Tree Song got heavily nerfed in PvP, on weapon- / legendswap proccing effects like Sigil of Cleansing, Sigil of Escape and Cleansing Channel became significantly more important for managing condition pressure. Therefore, the Weapon Swap to Staff into Renewing Wave is the most important cleansing resource in condition matchups, especially relevant for timeframes in which you can’t access Tree Song immediately – which is even more important to keep in mind on this build, because Weapon Swap to staff is also considered an offensive tool to trigger Brutality in case we decided to run Brutality over Swift Termination.
